Takeaway from Gangneung Danoje Festival

Valuable Chance to Learn About Korea, Life

My name is Irina Park and I am twenty one years old. I am the 3rd generation of Koreans who were born in Kazakhstan. Currently I am studying in Seoul National University majoring in business administration.
Last weekend I had a great opportunity to go to Korean traditional festival "Dano" in Gangneung, Gangwondo province with members of Asia Journalist Association and its associates. It was really such a great time with amazing people there.
First of all we visited a museum, watch awesome Korean traditional performances and the festival itself. And we could experience Korean traditional tea tasting and other wonderful traditional ceremonies and performances.

Special Stay at Traditional House

Last weekend I participated in the "Danoje" experience program arranged by the Committee for the Gangneung Danoje Festival. The Gangneung Danoje is a folklore ritual that has transcended this city in Gangwon Province for more than a thousand years. Thanks to its time-honored worth, it was designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2005.The Gangneung Danoje, not only the longest in history but also maybe the biggest in scale among all regional festivals in Korea, has been held around Dano, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month (June 16 on solar calendar this year). I saw many people from all over the country gather in this beautiful east coast city to enjoy the festival.

Danoje Festival Fam Tour

Some 30 members and associates of the Asia Journalists Association took part in the Gangneung Danoje Festival June 12-13 for a personal experience and profound understanding of the Korean traditional culture unique in the eastern coastal area of the nation. In addition to domestic and foreign journalists, the tour attracted dozens of representatives of foreign students studying in Seoul National University and Kookmin University who come from seven different countries ? China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan, providing them with precious chances to get acquainted with the nation's traditional culture. The tour proceeded in a very friendly and cozy atmosphere and picked up more impetus, boosted by Korea's 2-0 win in the World Cup match against Greece the night June 12. AJA members watched the bout in a hotel pub while enjoying beer together. The Festival was designated as Korean Intangible Cultural Property No. 13 in 1967 and as a UNESCO "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" in 2005. The Asia Dano Festival, lasting until June 19, is featuring performances and exhibitions for the exchange of Dano cultures from different Asian nations like China and Japan, in particular.
